The Greek Islands by regions
There are 1400 islands in Greece of which 169 are inhabited so one can easily find what one seeks. Whether one wants to travel to an isolated island or to a cosmopolitan Greece island full of luxury hotels or even to explore the remains of some of Europe's oldest civilizations, it is all there for you. For most, it is the lure of sand, sea and the year round of sunshine weather, which is the biggest attraction.
The most famous are Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Skiathos, Skopelos, Corfu, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Aegina...
Cyclades islands,
They are located in the central and southern part of the Aegean Sea, are undoubtedly the most visited and famous islands of all the Greek destinations. It offers to visitors the choice to experience the crazy, the quiet, the famous, the historic, the beautiful and the exotic.
Dodecanese Islands,
much closer to Asia Minor than to the national Greek territory, the Dodecanese are always sunshine and offer to visitors the chance to travel into the heavy historical heritage.
Eastern Aegean Sea Islands,
although mountainous and green, along with the long beaches, make them ideal for hiking. This group is the less frequented of the Greek seas but not the less interesting.
Sporades Islands,
are maintaining their authentic island characteristics and unchanged local traditions. These islands have beautiful landscapes, fertile valleys and superb beaches and hotels.
Ionian Islands,
near the Greek western coast along the Epirus and the Peloponnese, the Ionian have boundless sandy beaches, pretty mountains with unique high white rocks and dense vegetation, clear blue seas and very beautiful bays with fantastic sea-caves.
Saronic Gulf Islands,
are the most accessible islands from Athens Greece. They differ much from the Greek mainland and are the ideal choice for a few days vacations.
Crete Island,
is the largest one and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful islands to travel to Greece. It has much to offer: rich historical heritage, villages, sandy beaches and Europe's only palm-tree forest.
